July 6th… Malawi Independence Day

July 9, 2018

54 years of independence and what do we have to show for it??? Not much!! I’m not here to rant, I’m here to share how I spent 6th July.
My aunt got married on July 7th and she lives in Mzuzu, a city in the Northern part of the country, meaning we had to travel from the south to the North. A NINE HOUR DRIVE!
06h00: Blantyre, Southern Region. Lying in bed. A winter morning, cold, drizzling. Why is this wedding happening in winter? Why must one leave the comfort of their bed.
07h00: All bundled up in the car. We are off, heading North.
Sometime towards Midday: the scenery changes from Brown and dust to Green and all so lush. I am HOME! The rolling hills and mountains of the North are ahead and around me, welcoming me home. It probably rained but it’s cleared out, the sky is blue with some cloud cover.
It’s not hot, it’s not cold it’s spring perfect.
As we head further North, the lake comes into view. Mountains on the left, the lake and where the sky touches the lake on the right. The hassle and stress of work and life forgotten. It is peaceful here. It is relaxing here. It is HOME and I missed it. This wedding and an early morning was totally worth it!
